What to expect on the trail when Fishing in Kodiak
The trail head starts at the American River and continues about 16 miles until it reaches Saltery River stretching for several miles in either direction. The rugged trail passes through creeks, mountains, valleys and a few mud holes. Alaskan wildlife always seems to be out and about, so have your camera at the ready. Commonly seen are Kodiak Brown Bear, deer, bison, fox, the American Bald Eagle, wild horses, mountain goats and of course tons of fish. Depending on the weather (which can literally change every two minuets) the trail can be dusty, wet, hot or cold. Be prepared, dress in layers and bring a rain jacket.
A bit about last year’s Fishing in Kodiak
Alaska Fish and Game reported over 58,000 Sockeye Reds passing through the weir between Mid June and early August. Long after the weir was down, we were still catching Reds into August. Reds were found virtually in just about every deep hole, under shady branches and on every bend of the river. The end of August, Silvers started to make their run upstream. Through October these monster Silvers were aggressively attacking our flies. Just about every cast we hooked into a battleship. These Silvers were like torpedo’s rocketing through the water, having no problem making the reel sing down to the backing. Can’t wait to see what this year brings.
